THE WARMPIRE'S NEW CLOTHES

The Brits have again shown how hot the global warming issue is, with the World Naked Ride fleshing out the world's present perception of the top-ic. One doesn't quite know if the efforts to reduce climate change included bumming rides for p-assers by on the cycles they rode. These green bikers, on Saturday, rode naked through East Sussex. The London leg began at Hide Park and finished in Willyngton Arch, "a route of about six miles", says a BBC report. One would have thought that the sight of so many people displaying prime, painted meat in public would have sent local temperatures soaring, but the protasstors disagreed. Previously, a similar rally registered their disapproval of the world's need for oil. I agree. I never feel the need for lubricants, myself! The cyclists have their own website and say that "moving needs should be reduced". I always thought being naked increases movement and temperature, but I guess the Brits are cold and stiff! The group is selling, for $25 a piece, T-shirts. What the..? Isn't that a contradicktion? I thought the hole point was to expose the bare truth about the need to stitch in a car-a-van of cyclists who will surely get the booby prize in the race against global warming.
In 2005, these guys stripped, and the oil problem got solved. Gas is so expensive today that I, like many gastroenterologists, treat flatulence free of cost! I propose that we rename petrol as 'nudium' because it is a rare gas (like helium) today! What next: terrorism?

NEVER REST AT THE EVEREST!

Another heroic human effort at climbing the peaks of scientific knowledge is underlined by the creation of the world's highest laboratory by a team of scientists who have not only taken the dare to climb Mount Everest, but also to do studies on how the human body behaves in low-oxygen states.
The scientists are keeping a blog of their daily activities and sending it online from as high as 8000m above civilisation, yet another benefit of the information revolution!
Among the many fascinating things one learns is that computer hard disks fail at 4,500 m above sea level, and so these guys have specially designed hard disks. Cool!
At the summit, or just below it, the scientists took blood samples from the femoral artery and were astonished to discover arterial oxygen levels lower than what they had seen even in sick intensive-care patients. Another example of how the human body takes it to a higher level in adversity!
I would like to highlight here the tremendous role played in all this by the Sherpas, the local Tibetan mountain climbers. It is funny how I, like many, always thought Sherpas were Nepalis. These men, who have a reputation for being gentle and loyal, have carried huge pieces of equipment and gear on their backs and climbed all the way up the camps. They have also carried the blood samples from near the summit to the labs. Now just imagine if the Sherpa, carrying the box, slipped and lost the blood samples, how successful the whole expedition would have been! And who do you think is doing the manual job of clearing the Base Camp of the tons of garbage that have accumulated over years?

Hot air on global warming!

Do you really believe the global warming alarmists? I don't. For thousands of years, as far as I know, climate changes have occurred more than what have been seen recently, and the scientists clamoring against greenhouse emissions (or whatever they call it) are not purveyors of the gospel truth.
Here is a sane voice rarely heard amidst the hysteria of the apocalyptic cries of global warming. Michael Crichton (an author I admire a lot) has made startling assertions on the environmentalists' claims on global warming in his best-selling book State Of Fear. I recommend you buy this book, if you have not done so already.

A cat-as-trophy!

We all know that the world's most magnificent cats are rapidly dwindling, even though laws have long banned poaching, hunting, selling, or buying anything to do with tigers. Why is it then that powerful governments are unable to legislate and regulate their way through the problem and save the tiger?
For his refreshing, new perspectives on tackling the problem, Barun Mitra is now one hot cat in Asia.
